The World Health Organization recommends that mothers with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 should be encouraged to initiate or continue to continue to breastfeed.  Mothers should be counselled that the benefits of breastfeeding substantially out weigh  the potential risks for transmission. It goes on to say that Mother and infant should be able to remain together to practice skin to skin contact, including kangaroo care, especially immediately after birth and udring the establishment of breast feeding, whether they or their infants have suspected or confirmed COVID 19.

As the COVID‐19 pandemic evolves, human milk banks world‐wide continue to provide donor human milk to vulnerable infants who lack access to mother’s own milk. This study shows that SARS‐CoV‐2 is effectively inactivated by Holder pasteurisation (treating the milk at 62.5°c for 30 minutes) suggesting that existing milk bank processes will effectively mitigate the risk of transmission of SARS‐COV‐2 to vulnerable infants through pasteurised donor human milk.
